A Closer Look at Your Baby’s Development
What is a Growth Scan?
A growth scan is a detailed ultrasound that assesses how well your baby is growing during pregnancy. This scan is usually performed in the second or third trimester and takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
The sonographer will take a range of measurements, including:

HC (Head Circumference) – Around your baby’s head

AC (Abdominal Circumference) – Around your baby’s waist

FL (Femur Length) – The length of your baby’s thigh bone
These figures are plotted against a growth chart to determine whether your baby’s development is on track for your stage of pregnancy. In some cases, additional checks such as umbilical doppler may be performed to assess the blood flow between the placenta and baby. Fluid levels and the position of the placenta are also routinely reviewed during the scan.
What to Expect Before, During, and After​
Before Your Appointment
Please arrive with an empty bladder to allow for a clearer scan. As a teaching clinic affiliated with a university trust, you may occasionally see students in attendance. If you prefer not to have a student present, simply let your sonographer know.
During the Scan
A qualified NHS-registered sonographer will gently perform the scan and take the necessary measurements. If your baby is in a less-than-ideal position, we might invite you to relax in our waiting area with complimentary drinks until the baby moves into a better position.
After the Scan
The sonographer will explain the results and provide you with a printed copy. If anything is unclear, please don’t hesitate to ask for further explanation. If any follow-up is required, we’ll arrange a review with your obstetric team, either at a future consultant appointment or via the maternity assessment unit.

Arrive with an empty bladder (unlike early pregnancy scans, a full bladder is not necessary)

Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your bump

Bring a loved one – you're welcome to share this special moment

Plan some extra time in case we need to wait for baby to move

Let us know in advance if you’d prefer a private appointment without students present
